About the Business
Cooper & Leatherbarrow was established in 1902 by Ernest Cooper in a former photographer's business on the corner of Russell Street and Northgate in Darlington (opposite to where Marks & Spencers currently stands). George Leatherbarrow joined the practice in 1912 and the business became Cooper & Leatherbarrow in the mid-1930s.
The move to our current location in Duke Street came in 1967, from where our family firm has served our clients ever since. Ellis Leatherbarrow, grandson of George, joined the firm in 1981 and is now the principal, having succeeded his father, Ian, on his retirement in 1995. From its inception, the practice has had full workshop facilities, offering a comprehensive and speedy repair service. Workshop manager, Howard Bainbridge, is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers with over 60 years experience.
